Tensions are high in advance of the referendum on the new constitution and presidential elections held at the end of September. Explosion at Dushanbe airport and heavy fighting in Garm Valley and Tavildara area. Combined with a poor harvest and inadequate imports food shortages have sharply worsened.
Food availability prospects for the winter appear bleak and international agencies are increasing their import and distribution plans.
