Launch of The Sphere Handbook
Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response
Hosted by PLAN UK

Thursday 14 April 2011, 6.00 pm – 8.00pm

The Commonwealth Club, home of the Royal Commonwealth Society
25 Northumberland Avenue
London, WC2N 5AP

This is an important milestone for the humanitarian sector in general and the Sphere Project in particular. The Sphere Handbook establishes shared principles and a set of universal minimum standards in core areas of humanitarian response. It offers a common language and provides guidance for effective and accountable humanitarian response and advocacy.

As the flagship publication, it reinforces the aim of improving the appropriateness and quality of assistance to people affected by disasters and improving the accountability of States and humanitarian organisations and other actors to their constituents, donors and the affected communities.

What are the challenges for the humanitarian sector as a whole?

Chaired by Sir Nicholas Young, Chief Executive, British Red Cross, this event brings together leading commentators to discuss these challenges and offers the opportunity for debate between the audience and a panel of experts including:

Jane Cocking, Humanitarian Director, Oxfam

James Darcy, Research Fellow, Overseas Development Institute

Brendan Gormley, Chief Executive, Disasters Emergency Committee

Dr Unni Krishnan, Disaster Response Policy Coordinator, Plan International
