The civil war in Liberia and the fluid security situation in neighbouring Sierra Leone have created almost 3 million internally displaced/refugees with spontaneous repatriations occurring to newly liberated areas and further displacement caused by movements of front-lines.
The estimated numbers of refugees/displaced are:
- Liberia: 1,750,000
- Sierra Leone: 300,000
- Côte dIvoire: 250,000
- Guinea: 600,000
The condition of these populations varies with some areas experiencing high rates of malnutrition. Overall, the security situation appears to be deteriorating rather than stabilising.
